ARTISANAL HANDICRAFT, is any of a wide variety of types of work where useful and decorative objects are made completely by hand or by using only simple tools. It is a traditional main sector of craft, and applies to a wide range of creative and design activities that are related to making things with one’s hands and skill, including work with textiles, moldable and rigid materials, paper, plant fibers, etc. Usually the term is applied to traditional techniques of creating items (whether for personal use or as products) that are both practical and aesthetic.
Why should I visit the Dayboro Hay-Cottage?
If you are looking for a unique handmade gift for that special person or an ideal Australian made gift for overseas visitors, then come and see us in the heart of the Dayboro Valley. Hay-Cottage is also a great place for history buffs as it was built in 1869 and displays original pieces from the era.
Dayboro? Never heard of it.
Dayboro is a beautiful old country town located in the Moreton Bay Region, Queensland, Australia. It is approximately 46 kilometres north-northwest of Brisbane, the state capital. Our arts and craft gift shop sits right in the middle of our town. D’Aguilar Range and Mount Mee are to the North of Dayboro. Many motorbike riders use Dayboro as a meeting point to cruise up the mountain range. On a weekend, you can see many unique as well as modern motorcycles parked in front of our Hay-Cottage.
Other nearby towns include Petrie and Samford, which are starting points of the road cyclists, who use Dayboro as a resting point. The land surrounding the town supported avocado and pineapple plantations, as well as dairy cattle. Unfortunately, many farmers retired from farming, either due to age or economics.
Who makes the art and crafts?
Many of these farmers and their families have remained in Dayboro and taken up arts and craft hobbies. The result is the beautiful hand-crafted work that is for sale in the Hay Cottage, such as clothing (especially baby clothing), woodwork, jams (made from fresh local produce), jewellery and so much more.
Who looks after the Hay-Cottage Dayboro?
Hay Cottage Arts and Crafts Association, which is a non-profit organization, and is run by its Dayboro arts and crafts members. The members looks after the Hay-Cottage and ensures a warm welcome to any visitor to Dayboro, who is looking for original and local made artwork, novelty or functional items.
